Yula Korltiz reviewed by Phil Walker

Yula Korlitz is the first commercially available expansion set / figure for the Tannhauser boardgame, with many more planned in the coming months. I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect from this set, so when it arrived I was (with a slight exception) pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity of the contents. Considering she costs just over a fiver, you get a ton of stuff (OK, admittedly it’s all needed) but as a whole it makes the price of prepaints from some other companies look well over the top.... review continues below ››

Anyway, onto the figure. There’s really only one problem, so let’s get that out of the way first. Despite the sturdiness of the box, I think the manufacturers would do well to look at how future sets are packaged - there’s so much stuff in there that poor Yula is pushed about quite a bit, to the extent that mine was severely bent (almost broken) at the ankles. I’ve read dozens of comments from people who’ve had the same problem, and even though it can be corrected quite simply with the old hot water trick it’d be nice if new releases don’t suffer the same issue.

That aside, the Yula figure itself is really good. In fact, for a prepaint it’s excellent - there’s some proper detailing, and I’d go so far as to say it’s a better job than the ones in the main Tannhauser box. Not sure if this is a case of the factory getting up to speed with what they’re producing, but it’s a good omen for future figgies!

Also in the box you get all the tokens you’ll need to use Yula in the game, a nice sturdy character card, and a really neat little rulebook that contains all the background of the character, details and rules on the equipment she can use and so on. Best of all, there’s a new scenario included - a great idea that I hope they’ll continue with each set that comes out. There’s nothing worse than buying new addons for a game then feeling slightly at a loss as to what to do with them - it’s nice added value and I tip my hat to the creators for the effort. I also really like the ‘Challenges’ addition - it’s a variant rule for characters that gives them personal objectives to overcome during the course of a game - very useful if you manage to succeed as you get 2 Victory Points for doing so!

Game wise, I haven’t had a chance to use her that much, but the one game I did play showed that she’s a cracker when it comes to close combat (as you’d expect) - her stats and equipment are naturally weighted towards this, and she has a couple of really nasty tricks up her sleeve to ensure her victims remember her - or not, as they’re mostly fatal!

All in all, what’s not to like? If you have Tannhauser, play it and enjoy it, then this is only going to improve the experience for you. I rate this product 9/10 - if they can sort out the packing problems for future figures, then it’ll be full marks all round!
