UNA Steel Troopers reviewed by Russ Scott

There have been a few comments about the cost of these releases, and I think the pros and cons have been discussed in a lot of depth, but don’t worry... I’ll throw in my tuppence in a bit! Straightaway, the paintjob on the minis themselves is of a high enough standard to make these a more than worthwhile purchase - one of the downside on the original UNA troops was the overall lack of detail, but this has been more than rectified... review continues below ››

Steel Troopers Unit Box

Item Code: UNEL01

About this item:
Steel trooper units are the base on which the White Stars army is built. In their standard configuration, the five fighters are equipped with laser rifles, giving them one hell of a range to wipe the enemy before he even gets into shooting position. The dreaded missile launcher works marvels against amored vehicles. his photo presents the prepainted minis as they come out of the box.

So, although the actual poses are identical to those in the Damocles set, they now have highlights / lowlights
/ weathering on all areas - the faces in particular have had some real attention paid to them (some of the teeth have been picked out, there is some nice detailing on the eye sockets) - alright, a lot of it looks to be the result of washes, but it’s a real and beneficial progression.

Better still, you get 6 interchangeable heads - they’re a bit tough to changeover (I did think either the mini or my fingers would break first) but it’s a nice feature and means you get less of a homogenous look if you’ve got a large number of troops, and a tip of the hat to Rackham for using 6 different poses..

Three cards come in the box - the ‘standard’ Steel Trooper profile plus a Sergeant card - combine these with the ‘new’ rules published in CH12 and you can start to move your games beyond the scenarios in the main game box. Finally, it should be said that these minis would make great ‘take out and play’ replacements for other scifi / near future games.
