| When the pic of the Pan
Oceania Cutter first went up on the Infinity website my jaw literally
dropped – possibly one of the most amazing minis I've ever
seen, to me it summed up everything that's cool about Sci-fi –
clean lines, high tech weaponry, glowing lights, a dynamic pose...
before Russ I think had even seen it I was emailing him asking
him when he'll get one in stock, and at the first opportunity
I got I bought it... review continues below

Assembly was pretty straight-forward – like most Infinity
stuff, pieces go together well with no real need for greenstuffing.
I wanted to put it on a scenic base and so that meant pinning
it down at the feet – unfortunately, a little over-zealous
in my need to secure it firmly meant I drilled through the top
of its back foot – oops! Mold lines were also negligible.
Bizarrely, there was in there two little fins that no-one I know
of could find a use for – they weren't on the “official”
pics and nowhere seemed obvious for them to go, so they stayed
in the box. I don't know if anyone else has found a use for them?..
In terms of rules, there's little I
could say, at least in terms of table top experience, not having
a Pan Oceania army to play it alongside. In a nutshell though,
the Cutter represents the height of Pan Oceania's technology –
it has full thermo-optical camouflage meaning it can start the
game completely untouchable (ie invisible), it has a heavy multi
machine gun that can spit out a large amount of ammo and varied
ammo at that. Its stats are pretty good – not the best out
there, but good enough.
A mini, as beautiful as this though,
doesn't need an army as reason to buy it – the pure visual
and painting pleasure is enough of a reason to shell out for one
– although more expennsive than the TAG, everything about
it, the miniature and its rules far out-strip it in value for
money. In some ways, being sooo nice made it a bit daunting and
intimidating to start painting – its the kinda mini that
demands you spend time on it.
When Arcane minis ran its first painting competition, that was
motivation enough to paint it up to the best possible standard
I could manage – I felt the current paint scheme on the
box was just a little bland – I liked the muted blues and
greens, but for a piece of high tech military equipment with the
ability to disappear into the background, it needed something
a little more special. Going for a clean paint scheme that has
an almost holographic effect I tried purples, blues, greens and
white – you know those cars that have that unusual paint
finished that change its colour with the light? That was what
I was aiming for... of course, thats not easy and so the whole
mini took just over 2 months to complete, but the finished piece
was well worth it – alongside the marine colours of greens,
blues and purples, I also stuck to green and blue OSL glows to
link it to the naval vessels of this world.
Overall an awesome mini, a joy to paint,
and if it ever does see a table top up close, I imagine it'll
play as well as well as it looks.
