Lathiem Oakleaf reviewed by Russell Scott

When I first saw the painted version of this miniature, I thought I was looking at a 2d picture - it's *that* convincing. Yes, that's testament in part to the paintjob, but be assured that the sculpt itself plays a massive part in turning this figure from 'just a mini' into something that's a real work of art. I have to admit, I'm blown away by this figure - I think it's one of the best examples of the hobby I've seen in years. Why? Well, simply put... review continues below ››

...the quality of the sculpting is fantastically high. It's not just the level of detail (which is excellent in its own right) - by far the most impressive aspect is the near perfect proportions of the figure. You could give this to art students as a primer for anatomy - it's *that* good.

So, these superlatives aside, what else can I tell you about this product? Well, it's one of those sculpts that takes some of the most obvious and cliched fantasy trappings and breathes a fresh leash of life into them. All the barbarian standards are here - the fur trimmed animal skin cloak, the heavily strapped boots, the stone brooches hanging off the belt - but they're all treated with such finesse as to make them look original.

This freshness is backed up with other, more individual, touches. The huge two handed sword resting across the figure's back looks like a tooth dragged straight from the maw of some vicious prehistoric beast, but just when you think 'that's a bit over the top' you spy the smaller, one handed sword strapped to the guy's waist - there's brains as well as brawn at work here. And just check out that face - it's the expression of someone you really wouldn't want to mess with!

If you're a serious painter, this is one mini that you're definitely going to want to add to your collection. There are great details waiting to be brought out, but this is balanced (as in all the 'best' minis) with 'blank canvas' areas where you can really show off your skills. Enigma is a great range in general, but this sets a standard for their future releases to live up to.
